In the fourth quarter, Saints linebacker Tyrann Mathieu hit Baker Mayfield directly in the ribs after throwing the ball on a two-point conversion attempt. After the game, Mayfield was seen cautiously heading to the locker room. On a two-point conversion with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trying to cut the deficit to eight, Baker Mayfield threw a pass to Chris Godwin in the end zone. However, when Mayfield released the ball, he was hit hard in the chest by Mathieu, a hit that Mayfield was expecting.
“It’s one of those last-second scramblings, obviously, getting the ball to Chris (Godwin) at the last second,” Mayfield explained, according to ESPN. “They’re going to take a hit. It’s a physical team. Good team.” Mayfield also mentioned that X-rays of his ribs came back negative, indicating no serious injury.
