Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” is an action-adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1981. The script was written by Lawrence Kasdan, based on a story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Set in 1936, the film tells the story of the adventures of archaeologist Indiana Jones and the Nazi German army as they race to find the legendary Ark of the Covenant, which holds great power.

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” ending explained

In the final scene of the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Nazis decide to open the Ark of the Covenant in the desert, leading to a heartbreaking ending. Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood managed to survive the opening of the Ark, but were left alone inside the Ark. The film then jumps to a few weeks later, where Jones and Marcus Brody are arguing with government officials about the Ark.

It is revealed that the U.S. government has taken over the Ark and placed it in an unassuming crate stored in a large warehouse filled with similar crates, suggesting that it is being hidden away. One minor plot hole in the movie is how Indiana Jones survives aboard a German submarine.

Based on the film’s novel, Jones used his bullwhip to secure himself to the submarine’s periscope, then freed himself to swim behind the submarine, which was docked at a Nazi hideout. This makes sense because German submarines of that era would only fully submerge when preparing to attack an enemy ship, as they primarily used diesel engines that required oxygen to run.

The specific supernatural powers of Ark’s killing of Nazis in the film have not been fully explored. This power proved to be the power of God, and Nazis were killed for their lack of understanding and respect for this power. Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood survived because they didn’t watch the Ark to show proper respect. The spirits that emerged from the Ark were suggested to be angels, but their exact nature was not clearly explained.

The reason why the Ark of the Covenant was hidden in the warehouse was later revealed in the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Known as Hangar 51, the warehouse is a facility where the government stores important artifacts of supernatural or extraterrestrial significance.

In 1936, American archaeologist Indiana Jones retrieved a golden statue from a booby-trapped temple in Peru. However, his rival archaeologist Rene Belloc stole the statue from him. After returning to the United States, Jones learned from Army intelligence that the Nazis were searching for the Ark of the Covenant in Egypt. The Nazis believed that the Ark would make their army invincible and therefore they had to be stopped. Jones is recruited to find the Ark before they do.

Jones traveled to Nepal and met Marion Ravenwood, the daughter of his late mentor. They learn that the Nazis are after a medal that will lead them to the Ark. After a confrontation with Gestapo agent Arnold Toht, the bar where they were staying was set on fire and Jones and Marion escaped with the medals.

In Cairo, Jones meets his friend Sarah and discovers that the Nazis have a replica of the emblem. Jones and Sarah realize the Nazis were digging in the wrong place and use the correct measurements to find the location of the Well of Souls where the Ark is hidden. They retrieve the Ark but are captured by Belloc and the Nazis.

Jones and Marion escape the Well of Souls and take control of a truck carrying the Ark. They planned to transport the Ark to London, but it was intercepted by a German submarine. Jones secretly boarded the submarine and traveled with it to an island in the Aegean Sea, where Belloc planned to test the Ark’s power.

On the island, Jones attempts to destroy the Ark but is captured. Belloc opened the Ark, hoping to harness its power, but instead, supernatural forces were unleashed, killing Belloc, Thoth, and the Nazis. Jones and Marion survive by closing their eyes. When they opened their eyes again, the area was clear of bodies.

Back in Washington, D.C., Jones was rewarded by the government, but the Ark was taken away for study by “top people.” The film ends with the Ark being stored in a huge warehouse along with countless other crates.
