Teardown is a 2022 sandbox game released by Tuxedo Labs that tells the story of a struggling demolition company owner who becomes embroiled in police investigations and questionable missions. The game features destructible voxel levels where the player must collect or destroy objects related to security alarms. With upgradable tools and vehicles, players have unlimited preparation time to create a path through the game.

Once the security alarm is triggered, a countdown begins and players must complete the objective and reach the escape vehicle within sixty seconds. The game was developed by Dennis Gustafsson using a proprietary engine and became popular through Gustafsson’s development updates on Twitter. Teardown’s Early Access phase began in October 2020 and received a positive response, leading to a full release in April 2022.

Teardown is a sandbox game with puzzle elements that allows players to experience the action from a first-person perspective. The game consists of nine levels made entirely of destructible voxels, with certain materials requiring stronger tools to destroy. Starting with a sledgehammer, a fire extinguisher, and a spray can, players are free to navigate and mark points of interest.

Unlock additional tools like blowtorches, shotguns, bombs, and rocket launchers during the campaign, with the option to upgrade tools using cash earned in levels. Vehicles such as trucks, cranes and boats, as well as explosives such as propane tanks, aid in traversal and destruction.

Each mission has objectives, some required and some optional, which usually involve stealing or destroying specific objects related to security alarms. Once triggered, a countdown begins and the player has sixty seconds to complete the mission and reach the escape vehicle. That failed and a security helicopter intervened. Players can plan, view overviews and replay routes with unlimited set time. Accessibility options allow players to adjust difficulty.

Sandbox mode offers tools without goals, while Creative mode allows players to design levels. Three challenge modes add variety. Teardown supports mods, allowing you to create custom levels and structures using MagicaVoxel, and by September 2023, more than 6,000 mods will be available on the Steam Workshop. Mod competitions are held every two years, helping to enhance the game’s lasting appeal.

The story of Teardown unfolds through emails received by the player character in the fictional city of Rockler. Players control the owner of Löckelle Teardown Services, facing financial difficulties. The owner accepted Wu Guodong’s commission to demolish the building, but unknowingly violated the Cultural Heritage Protection Law. To avoid investigation, the owners assisted investigator Parisa Terdiman in investigating Lawrence Lee Jr. and Lee Chemical Company.

The story follows Lee and Wu as they plot destructive missions against each other. Tediman discovered that BlueTide, the energy drink company led by Mr. Amanatides, was the mystery customer. The owners were drawn to retrieve Amenatides’ information, creating a complex web of corporate intrigue. The owner’s mother, Tracey, remained in the dark when it came to purchasing a new company vehicle.

The story takes a darker turn as Amanatid seeks revenge, culminating in the creation of a machine of destruction – the Trux Terminator. Amenatidus brings chaos to Carrington, leading to a tense finale where the Master must guide the Trux Terminator to safety and save the town and Tracy from an unintended threat.
